Meet Ian O’Brien, Specialist OCD Therapist in Dublin & Online Across Ireland

II’m Ian O’Brien, a psychotherapist who specialises in OCD — and someone who has lived with it myself.

I know what it’s like to be trapped in loops of doubt, fear, and endless “what ifs.” I also know that change is possible. I’ve experienced it firsthand, and now I help others find their way through too.

You don’t need to feel fearless or fully ready to begin therapy. You just need to take one step — and I’ll meet you there.

Why I Specialise in Obsession Compulsive Disorder

My work is focused solely on OCD. I’ve walked this path personally, and I know how consuming intrusive thoughts and compulsions can feel. That lived understanding helps me connect with clients in a way that feels safe, empathetic, and grounded.

Combined with specialist training, this dual perspective allows me to offer therapy that is both evidence-based and deeply human.

My Approach to OCD Therapy

The most effective treatment for OCD is Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), and it’s at the heart of my work. But therapy is never one-size-fits-all. I use an integrative approach — balancing structure with flexibility, and science with compassion.

ERP (Exposure & Response Prevention)

Together we’ll face fears in manageable steps, without giving in to compulsions. Over time, ERP retrains the brain to loosen OCD’s grip.

ACT (Acceptance & Commitment Therapy)

Learn to unhook from thoughts and take values-based action, even in the presence of discomfort.

Humanistic & Relational

Therapy is a relationship. We’ll build trust, curiosity, and courage so that change feels possible — and sustainable.

My Background & Training

I’m a qualified psychotherapist with an MSc in Psychotherapy from Dublin City University. My training is integrative, combining humanistic, cognitive-behavioural (CBT), psychodynamic, and systemic approaches.

I specialise in treating OCD and have completed additional training and supervision specifically focused on OCD and anxiety-related conditions.

Beyond my clinical practice, I’m also a Director of OCD Ireland, a national charity supporting individuals affected by OCD and related conditions. I stay actively engaged in research, advocacy, and peer collaboration to ensure my practice remains current and effective.
